A color palette of soft khaki and cream snap to attention, especially when accented with black. Designer Michael Aiduss decorated this classic Cape Cod-style house in New Jersey with sophisticated and authentic style, plus a few gutsy moves, too.

Window Seat
Although this New Jersey cottage is rich in history, designer Michael Aiduss says, "I didn't want you to walk in thinking, Oh, it's the Colonial thing, all brown furniture and Williamsburg toile." Vibrant pillows in a Bermingham & Co. silk ikat through Brunschwig & Fils and Lee Jofa's Fairlight floral bring garden colors to the living room window seat, which is upholstered in Rogers & Goffigon's Delphina. Curtain fabric, Rose Cumming's Bird in Circle.

Living Room
The original architect-owner of the late-1930s house designed the living room around a Federal-period chimneypiece. Aiduss prefers to keep the overmantel cabinet half closed, offering just a teaser of the papier-mâché seascape within. Two sofa pillows in a Colefax and Fowler fabric echo Hinson & Company's Tree of Life crewelwork on a circa-1790 wing chair. Sea grass rug from Patterson Flynn Martin.

Silhouettes
Silhouettes hang in an informal "jumble," Aiduss says. "That way they don't feel too precious."
